11 Chilean regions report decline in COVID-19 cases in last 7 days

SANTIAGO, April 21 (Xinhua) — The Chilean Ministry of Health reported on Wednesday that 11 of the country’s 13 regions have seen a decline in COVID-19 cases in the last seven days.

Chilean Health Minister Enrique Paris also said in a statement that five regions of the country reported a decrease in the last 14 days.

According to the ministry, there were 4,914 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, as well as 36 more deaths, for a total of 1,141,403 cases and 25,353 deaths.

Chile has been facing another wave of COVID-19 infections over the last several weeks, leading to the near saturation of its critical hospital system.

The South American country has registered between 5,000 and 8,000 daily COVID-19 cases for several weeks.

Currently, a large part of the Chilean population, including the entire Santiago Metropolitan Region, is under quarantine to reduce the spread of the virus, while the country has closed its borders.
