Brazil’s COVID-19 death toll tops 215,000

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) — The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil registered 1,096 more deaths from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 215,243, the Health Ministry said Friday.

Another 56,552 COVID-19 cases were reported over the past day, bringing the national count to 8,753,920, the ministry said.

The state of Sao Paulo, the most populous in the country, is the hardest hit, with 1,679,759 cases and 51,192 deaths, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with 494,796 cases and 28,592 deaths.

ADDIS ABABA — The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent reached 3,368,330 as of Friday, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

According to data from the Africa CDC, the COVID-19 death toll in Africa rose to 82,954 with 2,824,960 recoveries, said the agency.

BRASILIA — Brazil’s Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) unanimously approved on Friday the emergency use of another 4.8 million doses of the CoronaVac vaccine against COVID-19.

The request was made by the Sao Paulo-based Butantan Institute on Monday, a day after Anvisa authorized the use of the first batch of 6 million doses of CoronaVac, which kicked off a countrywide COVID-19 vaccination process.

HARARE — Authorities confirmed that Zimbabwe’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Joel Matiza died of COVID-19 on Friday.

Matiza has thus become the third government minister to die of the virus within a week and the fourth since the virus was first reported in the country in March 2020.

HARBIN — Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province reported 56 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 37 asymptomatic infections on Friday, local health authorities said on Saturday.

Of the new confirmed cases, 47 were reported in the city of Suihua and nine in the provincial capital of Harbin, according to the Heilongjiang provincial health commission.
